LETA

History

The Laboratory of Applied Ethology and Animal Welfare (LETA), located at the Center for Agricultural Sciences (CCA) of the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) is a pioneer in Brazil, having been established in 1987, by professor Luiz Carlos Pinheiro Machado Filho. Since its first works, developed in the 1980s, studies on the behavior of cattle in natural pastures and ecological production systems with an emphasis on animal welfare have been sought. The lines of research developed by LETA are focused on animal behavior and well-being and on production systems that promote animal well-being and environmental, economic and social sustainability, focused on agro-ecological animal breeding. Currently, the laboratory develops projects in the areas of animal behavior and welfare; agroecological management of pastures, agroecological animal husbandry and unconventional therapeutic forms. During its 30 years dedicated to teaching, research and extension, focused on the reality of Brazilian agriculture, the laboratory has generated numerous publications in scientific journals with national and international repercussions. The lines of research to which LETA is dedicated have become lines of research in the Graduate Program in Agroecosystems at UFSC.
